C

Cache

A temporary storage area located locally or on a network that enables users to rapidly access the most frequently requested content, files and pages.

Cache Busting

A process that prevents browsers or proxy servers from serving content from their cache so that browsers and proxies can fetch a fresh copy for each user request. This is used for attaining a more accurate count of user requests.

Caching

A process where a Web element such as a page or an ad are copied into a browser or proxy server for later reuse. It reduces redundant network traffic and increases efficiency.

Campaign Optimization

A feature that automatically manages campaigns for you to help maximize the effectiveness of your spending, based on guidelines you provide. Campaign optimization saves you time while helping you achieve your business objectives.

Canonical NAME (CNAME)

The official name of a host as opposed to an alias.

Card Sorting

A strategic discovery activity that enables the user to use cards to rearrange a website structure by grouping information according to how the user would expect to access content or specific functionality.

Cascading Style Sheet (CSS)

A stylesheet language that defines how to display or style markup language such as HTML and XHTML in a webpage or document.

Chicklet

A term referring to an RSS button.  It is an icon that allows users to easily subscribe content from a website or newsfeed.

Click Fraud

A type of internet crime occurring in pay per click advertising in which a person, automated script or computer program repeatedly clicks on a web advertisement, simply to raise a charge per click to the marketer.

Click Rate

The number of clicks an ad receives divided by the number of times the ad was downloaded within a page. Typically, it is displayed as a percentage.

Click Through Rate (CTR)

The percentage of visitors who viewed an ad and clicked on it. It is used to measure the success of an online advertising campaign.

Client

A computer application or program that contacts a server to obtain data via the Internet or another network.

Client Error

An error that occurs due to an invalid request by the user’s browser.

CMYK [Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black)]

A subtractive color model used in color printing that works by partially or entirely masking certain colors on a typical white background.

Co-Registration

A cooperative marketing technique where consumers register to receive multiple offers through an integrated registration form.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)

Also referred to as Spread Spectrum Techniques, it is a  method of frequency reuse in which each voice or data call uses the same radio band frequency, but is each assigned with a unique code.

Codec

A device or program that is capable of compressing or decompressing the size of audio, video and image files for streaming over a data network or computer storage.

Color Palette

The finite set of colors used to manage digital images.

Common Short Code Administration (CSCA)

An organization primarily located in the United States, Canada, China and the United Kingdom that administers the Short Code registry for a particular region.

Connection Speeds

The rate that information can be transferred from the internet to a computer.  A fast loading website can result in higher conversion rates and more sales.

Consumer Behavior

The study of people’s buying habits that attempts to understand the buyer or buyers’ decision making process.

Consumer Generated Content

Refers to the various kinds of media content such as reviews or commentary produced by end-users and is available publicly. Because it is created by the consumer, it is seen as more credible because it is not unsolicited and does not financially benefit.

Consumer Generated Media

A term referring to audio, video, text and multimedia posts created by consumers to support or oppose products, brands and corporations.

Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG)

Any type of consumable goods that are ready to be purchased by a consumer.

Content

Text, graphics, sounds and video elements encountered as part of the user experience on websites.

Content Integration

When advertising is integrated into editorial content or placed in a contextual envelope.

Content Management System (CMS)

A software tool used to easily create, manage, edit and publish content on a website without technical knowledge.

Context of Use

The conditions under which an artifact or software product is to be used on a normal day to day situation.

Contextual Advertising

Targeted advertising that is based on displayed website content.

Contextual Interviews

A method of observing users in their natural setting to better understand how they work.

Conversion Rate

The percentage of visitors who convert their website visits into desired actions based on the subtle or direct requests via site content or ads.

Cookie

A segment of data sent by a server to a web browser which is then sent back to the server when a browser requests a webpage in order to track and maintain user-specific information.

Cost-Per-Action

An online advertising pricing model in which the advertiser pays a fee for each specified action linked to the advertisement.

Cost-Per-Click (CPC)

An online advertising pricing model in which the advertiser pays a fee based on the number clicks the advertisement generates.

Cost-Per-Customer (CPC)

The cost paid for by an advertiser upon acquiring a customer.

Cost-Per-Lead (CPL)

The advertising cost based on the number of leads, or database files, received.

Cost-Per-Order (CPO)

Also referred to as the cost-per-transaction, it is the advertising cost based on the number of orders received.

Cost-Per-Sale (CPS)

The advertising cost to generate one sales transaction.

Cost-Per-Thousand Impression (CPM)

The fee advertisers must pay based on the number of times its advertisements are shown.

Cost-Per-Transaction (CPT)

Also referred to as the cost-per-order, it is the advertising cost according to the number of orders received.

Crawler

A software program that visits webpages and creates a copy of the visited pages for later processing and builds indexes for search engines.

Creative

The characteristics of a marketing activity along with the involved technology used to create any type of advertising material including HTML, Flash, Java and JPEG.

Creative Brief

A documente used by creative professionals that serves as a guide post for the development of creative deliverables such as design, copy and websites.

Cross-Pollinated Marketing

The practice of borrowing marketing best-practices, tacticsand messaging from companies, business models and industries other than yourown to gain insights, new perspectives and garner fresh results while marketingyour organization.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

The business practices and information technology and software solutions implemented by a company to foster customer care, loyalty and support.

Customer Segment

An aspect of marketing in which a group of customers who share specific traits or behaviors are targeted.

Cyberspace

Coined by author William Gibson in his 1984 novel "Neuromancer," cyberspace is now used to describe all of the information available through computer networks.
