File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

A network protocol that facilitates downloading or uploading digital files from one computer to another.

Filter

A software program that is designed to weed out unwanted information and to control the information permitted to the reader.

Firewall

A security barrier configured to control communication and computer traffic between different security domains according to a set of rules and the level of security a network administrator wishes to employ.

First Party Cookie

Cookies understood to be the most secure and reliable method to measure visitor activity because they are set by the business rather than an outside vendor.

Flash

Adobe’s multimedia software that uses vector-based rich media file formats to display interactive animations on a webpage.

Flash Lite

A mobile, lightweight version of Adobe Flash Player. This version allows users to view multimedia content and applications using Adobe’s Flash tools via mobile phones and other portable electronic devices.

Flash Versions

Animation applications that allow a website to download quickly.

Floating Ad

An ad appearing to float over a webpage’s content within the main browser window.

Focus Group

A type of qualitative discovery or research that takes a representative group of people who are questioned about their opinions towards a product, service, concept, advertisement or even website. The generated feedback from focus group interviews are used to measure marketing success and to make improvements to an idea.

Fold

The line indicating the end of the visible portion of a webpage past which a user must scroll down to view more of the page.

Footer

Content located at the bottom of a web document that provides additional information such as the author, revision date, copyright and navigational links.

Form

A page written in HTML that passes information to the server and is used to gather and process information from users.

Frames

The independent sections displayed as panes and are used to organize a single webpage. Each frame is built as a separate HTML document where one master file controls the placement of the section within the page.

Frequency

A measure of the number of times a user visits a website during a reporting period.

Frequency Capping

Restricting the number of times a web user is shown a particular advertisement within a specific time frame.
